Art and Culture
This course is an overview of the historical development of Western Art, architecture and culture and the major civilizations that influence them. ***This course meets Minnesota Transfer Curriculum goal area 6.

Color and Design
This course is an introduction to color, the science of color, the history of color, and the experience of color, and how to mix and use color. Watercolors are used to create the color exercises. Learners will learn to work with color systems and to think creatively with color

This is a basic course designed to use principles and processes of design to produce advertising for products, services, and ideas. The learner will use traditional design approaches as well as the computer to create advertising for the marketplace.

Illustration/Painting Approaches
This is an introduction to illustration and painting approaches using oil paints to obtain realistic and abstract effects in still lifes, landscapes, and other subject matter applicable to the illustrator and fine art painter. The application and techniques of oil paints to canvas panels and stretched canvas will be explored. This includes brush techniques, mixing, preparation of canvas to stretchers, manipulation of pigment with medium and care and maintenance of materials. Special focus will be on painting approaches appropriate to the assignments, the development of subject matter and finished artwork.

Photoshop
This course will help the learner master the dominant photo manipulation software used in industry. Projects will be created using Photoshop as well as InDesign as the two dominant software programs.

Editorial Design
The design of publications is explored with special emphasis on page layout, style sheets, copy fitting, copy proofing, and the creating of original templates and their multiple uses. All design principles and elements are applied to a series of editorial projects using a computer page layout program.
