College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a way for a student to earn credit for what the student already knows. CLEP tests offer individuals the chance to demonstrate knowledge that they have gained independently and earn credit. Students may earn credit by successfully passing the CLEP subject or general examinations, which measure achievement in specific college courses. You may find Alexandria Technical & Community College's CLEP Policy here.
The Testing Center will administer the exams Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. by appointment only. Please stop by the Center in Room 112 or call the Center at 888-234-1222, ext. 4487, or 320-762-4487 for more information or to schedule an exam.
Scoring
Alexandria Technical & Community College uses the American Council on Education recommended credit granting score. Most tests are scored immediately. Please allow six weeks for any essay test to be scored. If you need College Composition credits, you will need to take the test four weeks before the beginning of the semester the credit is needed.
Identification
Two forms of identification are required. Primary ID must have photo and signature. Secondary ID must have photo and/or signature.
Cost
The cost of the CLEP test is $102.00. Credit card payment is preferred. If payment is made by check, one check is made payable to CLEP in the amount of $77.00, and one check for the administration fee is made payable to Alexandria Technical & Community College for $25.00. Payment is collected at the time of the test.
Time required
Please allow approximately two hours. Testing time is 90 minutes (College Composition is 120 minutes), but additional time is needed to check-in, answer questions, and generally get ready to take the exam.
Re-test
CLEP tests may be repeated after six months of the original testing date.
Transcripts/Get a copy of the test
You select the college you want your test scores sent to when you take the test. If you do not select a college at the time of testing, you will pay a CLEP transcript fee for this service at a later date. You will be given a printout of your test score (except College Composition) on the day of the test.
Total CLEP credits accepted at ATCC
Up to one-third of a student's credits may be granted through test-out (including advanced standing, credit for life experience, CLEP tests, etc.). The awarded credit will appear on the student's transcript with no effect on the student's GPA. CLEP credit may be used to repeat a course for which a previous grade of D or F has been received. Credit will not be awarded for courses in which a C or better grade has been earned. Students who have taken CLEP examinations elsewhere, including the military services, should submit an official transcript of their scores to the Registrar's Office where they will be processed for appropriate credit allocation.
