Careers

Graduates from this program will have taken the required number of credits to qualify as a designated coordinator. Students may be currently working in this field and can use the courses to help them move up the career ladder to become a Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP). Graduates can expect to work in the community supports field in the vocational, residential, behavior, health, or education areas.

Employment

Students graduating from this program are eligible for positions in several areas in the human services field with children, adolescents, young adults/adults, and senior citizens. The graduating student may serve people with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, mental illness, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury and related conditions. Students who may be interested in social work, sociology, psychology or similar health or social areas may want to consider this program as a well-rounded educational base for these areas of study.

In 1996, the Minnesota legislature approved this accredited diploma as meeting the educational criteria for obtaining the equivalent of Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP) status in day and supervised living services in Minnesota. The equivalent position is termed Designator Coordinator. Graduates can expect to work in the community supports field in vocational, residential, behavior, health, or education areas.
