Utility Company Presents Techniques to College Students
Center-Point Energy natural gas utility company provided a full day hands-on seminar for the Welding Technology students at Alexandria Technical College. Students were involved in the training and learned the proper techniques to API 1104 Welding Code for construction pipeline welding. In addition to steel piping, the students also learned about plastic piping, fittings, valves, and emergency field repair procedures.
Lowell Hjelle, Randy Hittle, and Corrie Stenson, construction piping technicians from Center-Point Energy's Alexandria area office conducted the seminar. They are certified to pipeline codes for working with low and high pressure steel and plastic materials. The students appreciated learning the new techniques and the opportunity to have this direct interaction with industry.
There are unlimited job opportunities for certified welders in the construction piping industry. The Welding Technology program at Alexandria Technical College prepares students for careers in three major areas of the welding industry: manufacturing, construction, and maintenance and repair. Related areas of instruction include interpretation of engineering drawings, blueprint reading, metallurgy, and the AWS Standard Welding Symbol interpretation.
