Alexandria College adds Legends Baseball, hires new head coach

Alexandria Technical & Community College will add Baseball to its Legends Athletics offerings for the spring 2023 competitive season with the hiring of Head Coach Jason Fischer.

Fischer comes to Alexandria College from St. Cloud Technical & Community College, where he coached the Cyclones for 10 years. Most recently, he led the Cyclones to their fourth Region XIII tournament championship and placed fifth at the World Series this season. During his tenure, his teams have an impressive 295-85 record and appeared in the World Series four times.

Baseball is the latest sport added to the Alexandria College Legends growing portfolio that includes Clay Target League, eSports, Golf and Competitive Fishing. Legends Volleyball and Soccer also are on the horizon. Baseball will compete in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC).

“The opportunity to move to Alexandria Technical & Community College was too good to pass up,” Fischer said. “The importance of athletics and student experience is evident on that campus. That is an environment I want to be a part of.”

Athletics builds school pride, creates student life experiences for all students and provides opportunities for student athletes who may not have considered Alexandria College otherwise. The college’s goal is to have more than 150 student athletes by fall of 2023.

“The addition of athletics programs has created a renewed excitement for Alexandria College,” said President Michael Seymour. “We have been selective in our portfolio of Legends programs to make sure we are choosing financially viable options where there are opportunities and demand from students and the community.”

Alexandria College already is no stranger to championship level competition. Clay Target League won division titles in 2019 and 2020, and the MCAC championship in 2019. The college hopes to continue to build on its success with Fischer’s hiring to recruit and lead its inaugural Baseball team.

Coach Fischer’s teams have routinely been ranked in the top 10 nationally.  They have been ranked as high as second in the nation and have been ranked nationally every year since 2011.  Because of this success he has moved more than 70 players on to four-year schools, most with scholarships.

Fischer also will teach Exercise Science at the college. He has a bachelor’s degree in Community Psychology, as well as master’s degrees in Physical Education and Sports Management, all from St. Cloud State University.
