If you are not a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or political asylee please follow these steps to apply:

First: Determine if Alexandria Technical & Community College offers a college experience in which you are interested. We offer mainly Associate degrees (AA, AS, AAS) that typically take full time students two years to complete. ATCC does not offer Bachelor's degrees or Master's degrees.

Application Instructions

No special admissions requirements. Please complete the online Application for Admission as a new or transfer student.

  3. Submit academic records
  4. Submit supporting documents:
    1. Photocopy of passport
    2. If you are currently attending another college, please complete the Transfer Release Form
    3. Immunization Record
    4. Proof of English proficiency
    5. Proof of Funding

Note: I-20 forms cannot be issued until all admission requirements are met and it has been determined that an applicant can be accepted into a degree-seeking program.

Your local U.S. embassy or consulate will have specific instructions on scheduling your interview after you have applied. Please keep in mind it may take several weeks or months to get an interview. Please refer to Study in the States for information on obtaining your student visa. Visa appointment wait times are available online from the U.S. Department of State.

  • Valid passport
  • I-20
  • Document proof of financial support for at least one year
  • Proof of SEVIS or FMJ fee being paid
  • Visa application forms (available from U.S. embassy or consulate)
  • Any other documents requested by your embassy

Proof of English Proficiency

If your education is outside of US education system, you must be able to demonstrate English proficiency within the last 2 years. Copies are not accepted. One of the following may be provided:

TOEFL: A minimum score of 500 on the written exam or 61 on the iBT exam is required.

IELTS: A minimum score of 5.5 is required on the International English Assessment Battery.

Duolingo English Test: Minimum score 90. The Duolingo English Test is an online proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand.

Successful completion of a college-level Composition I or equivalent course from an American college or university.

The following countries and territories are exempt and do not have to provide proof of English proficiency:

Proof of Funding

As an international student, you are required to demonstrate you have adequate funding for all expenses that will be incurred in your proposed program of study. Documentation must be accompanied by a bank statement in U.S. Dollars ($ USD) showing deposits and withdrawals.

Financial Certificate

A completed Alexandria College International Student Financial Information Form must be completed and demonstrate you have adequate funding for all of the expenses that will be incurred in your proposed program of study. This form must be in English and include the required signatures and supporting bank statements, affidavits of support or official letters.

The total of sufficient funds must be at least $20,000 for the first year and $22,000 for the second year. $1,000 scholarship is available from Alexandria Technical & Community College Foundation. International students are also eligible for up to $5,000 in campus student employment (work study) funds.

Health Insurance

All international students in the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities must purchase health insurance through UnitedHealthcare. Search for "Alexandria" on the UnitedHealthcare page to review the plan. Cost is estimated at $2,000 per academic year. Email businessoffice@alextech.edu and include your Alexandria College StarID or Student ID number to have the insurance charge added to your account.

Note: Typically insurance is obtained after your visa has been awarded.

Housing

Foundation Hall is apartment-style student housing located adjacent to campus. Applications for student housing open on November 1 each year for the upcoming Fall Semester, and are first come, first served.

Academic Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission is graduation from a secondary school or equivalent.

All incoming students are required to take the Accuplacer test, which is a course placement assessment. The test will be taken upon arrival to the college and must be completed before a student may register for courses.
