The Senior College Winter/January Series will explore, beginning with its prehistoric roots, the development and evolution of dramatic literature, theatrical production, and the performance space. We will take a narrative and pictorial voyage from the Classical Greco-Roman world through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Romantic Era to the 20th Century. On our journey, we’ll briefly examine the “world views” that led to the development of the various styles and genres of the literature, track the changes in performance techniques, and trace the transformation of the physical theatre itself.

This special winter session, entitled From Primitive Religious Ritual to Contemporary Postmodern Performance: A Travelogue of Western Drama and Theatre, will be taught by Dr. Robert Schultz, Professor Emeritus of Performance Studies at Texas A&M University. Dr. Schultz earned his Ph.D. at University of California, Santa Barbara, and has been active as an actor, director, designer, and producer in professional, community and educational theatre for nearly sixty years--including ten summers with Theatre Le Homme Dieu in Alexandria, MN. 

Among his over 100 production credits are the works of many of the world’s most famous playwrights, including: Pulitzer Prize winners--Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Edwin Albee, and Thornton Wilder; Nobel Laureates--George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter.  

Dr. Schultz’s Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival productions have won over 40 state, regional and national awards. His research has been published in The Drama Review, Theater History Studies, and The Encyclopedia of American Theatre Companies.  He is co-author/co-editor of The Longman Anthology of Drama and Theater and The Longman Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Drama. 

The January course begins Tuesday, January 17 and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays through Thursday, January 26.  All sessions are held from 3:15 pm to 4:45 p.m. The registration fee is $60 per person.
