In a first-of-its-kind regional event, various Minnesota high school eSports teams from across the state will compete for the inaugural Battle in the North title. The two-day event will be held on February 17-18, 2024 at Alexandria Technical & Community College in Alexandria, Minnesota.

The winning team will take home a $5,000 donation to grow their eSports program, plus a $1,000 ATCC scholarship for each team member, providing an opportunity for students to continue their eSports career at Alexandria College.

Teams will face off in Valorant, a 5v5 character-based tactical FPS created by Riot Games. Riot is the same studio behind League of Legends, the game that opened the doors to eSports as a mainstream competitive sport. In Valorant, each player has a specific role in their team, requiring strategy, skill, and coordination from each individual and the team as a whole. Regular matches will be BO1 format, and the finals will be BO3.

Prizes were generously donated by Gardonville Cooperative Telephone Association, the official sponsor of the inaugural Battle in the North eSports Tournament. Gardonville is the only local telecommunications service provider in Alexandria and the surrounding communities. “Providing world-class fiber-optic internet, voice and TV service is what we do, but it’s just a part of who we are,” Gardonville noted in a release. “As a cooperative, our mission is to better the lives of the people in the communities we serve by investing our time, funds and resources back into our communities, because this is our home too. We're proud to be the sponsor of the first ever Battle of the North and thrilled to help advance the eSports program for one deserving school and its students!”

All event matches will be live-streamed on Twitch at @atccmn_esports, and on Gardonville’s Stream TV, channel 4.

Openings are still available for teams interested in competing. Please contact event organizer Brandon Richards at brichards@myimpacks.com for more information.
