Tom Weller, Professional Truck Driver Instructor at Alexandria Technical and Community College, was named the Outstanding New Educator of the Year 2024 by the Minnesota State Transportation Center of Excellence.

This accolade recognizes early-career educators who exhibit a profound commitment to and potential for excellence in transportation teaching and student development.

With over half a million miles logged in just six years of driving tractor-trailers, Weller’s journey in transportation began in the fall of 2017 when he graduated from the Professional Truck Driver program at Alexandria College, where he earned the Outstanding Student Award and secured a spot on the Dean’s list.

After graduation, he began working at a local company in Osakis, Minn. He has transported a variety of freight, primarily focusing on refrigerated food-grade products and dry freight, to and from distribution centers, warehouses, and processors. As a local driver, Weller covered Minnesota and the surrounding states, managing up to 30 trailer connections per week.

His dedication to the field led him to join the Alexandria College's Professional Truck Driver program advisory committee and become a substitute teacher. Now, as a full-time instructor, Weller’s impact on his students and the broader educational community is undeniable.

Weller's commitment to his profession and his students is reflected in his continuous pursuit of excellence and his hands-on approach to teaching.

“While working with Tom, I have observed his dedication to the truck driving profession and his ability to handle stress and multiple student interests simultaneously," said Sean Johns, the Dean of Educational Services at Alexandria College. "As the program’s primary instructor, Tom has been able to expand truck driver training, adapt to new federal regulations, and handle typical workplace challenges professionally, with respect, and with the students as his top priority. Congrats Tom on earning this award.”

His extensive industry experience includes roles in tractor-trailer, tire and wheel fleet service, shipping and receiving management, truck and RV general management, finance, sales, parts and service management, and Peterbilt truck service management. He is also a certified FMCSA instructor in accordance with 49 CFR part 380 appendix A.

The Outstanding New Educator of the Year award is a testament to Weller’s dedication to fostering the next generation of truck driving professionals.
