What are the typical responsibilities of an MLT?  

Medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) have many responsibilities, including:   

• Testing and analyzing samples  

MLTs test blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids. They use microscopes, cell counters, and other lab equipment to analyze the samples.   

• Recording and reporting data  

MLTs record test data where results are entered into a patient’s medical record. They also collect and present data and statistics.   

• Maintaining equipment  

MLTs calibrate, clean, and maintain lab equipment. They also ensure quality control of samples.   

• Communicating with physicians  

MLTs discuss test results and findings with physicians. They may also greet patients and explain the steps for collecting blood or tissue.   

• Following safety rules  

MLTs wear personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, masks, goggles, and lab coats to safely handle specimens. They may also need to stand for long periods and occasionally lift patients.   

MLTs work in hospitals, diagnostic labs, colleges, and private companies. They often need a strong background in chemistry, research, and data analysis. They may also need an associate's degree in medical technology and specific certifications.
