Congratulations! You have taken the first step toward a bright new future by stumbling upon a sometimes-little-known career in the healthcare industry: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).

What are some benefits of a career in the field of medical technology?
  • Rewarding Career

As a valued member of the healthcare team, the lab tech performs laboratory testing on specimens to monitor a patient's health and disease.

  • Job growth

The field is expected to grow faster than average, with over 26,000 new positions projected by 2030.

  • Job security

There is a critical shortage of medical lab technicians in many parts of the country. Because of this, you should be able to obtain a position in your current area.

  • Salary

Medical lab technicians earn an average salary of $60,968 per year, with higher salaries for those working in public health facilities.

  • Benefits

Medical lab technicians may receive benefits such as 401(k) matching, employee stock purchase plan, flexible spending account, health savings account, paid time off, and parental leave.

  • Meaningful work

Medical lab technicians are critical in-patient care, helping physicians and surgeons determine diagnoses.

  • Hands-on work

Laboratory work is hands-on and exciting for those who enjoy solving problems

What are the typical responsibilities of an MLT?

Medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) have many responsibilities, including:

  • Testing and analyzing samples

MLTs test blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids. They use microscopes, cell counters, and other lab equipment to analyze the samples.

  • Recording and reporting data

MLTs record test data where results are entered into a patient’s medical record. They also collect and present data and statistics.

  • Maintaining equipment

MLTs calibrate, clean, and maintain lab equipment. They also ensure quality control of samples.

  • Communicating with physicians

MLTs discuss test results and findings with physicians. They may also greet patients and explain the steps for collecting blood or tissue.

  • Following safety rules

MLTs wear personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, masks, goggles, and lab coats to safely handle specimens. They may also need to stand for long periods and occasionally lift patients.

MLTs work in hospitals, diagnostic labs, colleges, and private companies. They often need a strong background in chemistry, research, and data analysis. They may also need an associate's degree in medical technology and specific certifications.
