From Personal Challenge to Published Wisdom: Faculty Member Transforms Stress Into Solutions

When our faculty member Karen Meuwissen was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at 23, she knew stress was making her condition worse. That realization sparked a decades-long journey that has now culminated in her newly published book, Take 5: A 30 day stress reset to a calmer, happier you.

A Book Born from Experience

After 20 years of teaching stress management and helping students, wellness clients, and company employees, she decided to reach a broader audience. Her target readers are overwhelmed women (ages 35-55) juggling full-time work, children, and aging parents—though as she notes, "Really, it is for anyone who feels like their life is out of control."

The writing process began during COVID, with summers of gradual progress until this year when she set firm deadlines and got it published. The content draws from two decades of teaching experience, 10 years of blog writing, and her personal journey as a Tony Robbins certified Life Coach.

Swimming with the Fish

One of her favorite chapters uses a vivid metaphor: "Fish just swim. They're not stressing about the shark that could be hiding behind the coral. They're busy enjoying the plankton and living in the moment. And if a shark shows up? They deal with it then. We humans are constantly worrying about what will happen in the future – the shark – instead, we need to be more like the fish, enjoy the moment and deal with the “shark” when it comes."

This reflects her core philosophy that challenges common misconceptions about stress. "We can't 'manage' stress, just like we can't 'manage' time. But we can manage how we respond to it," she explains. "Life will always be stressful, but you can learn how to be calmer, more grounded, and more content—without having to quit your job, move to a mountaintop, or become a monk."

Practical Five-Minute Solutions

"Take 5" offers 30 days of quick stress-busting tools that require just five minutes each. The book tackles real issues like perfectionism and people-pleasing with simple, actionable solutions. Her approach is refreshingly honest: no major life overhauls required, just practical daily actions that help readers "breathe easier, laugh more, and maybe even enjoy the ride."

Her most personally effective technique? "Prayer and letting go of what I can't control—I use it daily."

A Personalized Touch

When asked for her best advice for someone feeling overwhelmed, her response reveals her thoughtful approach: "Everyone and every situation is different, so I don't have one piece of advice to give. Instead, I would tell them to breathe and then we would go for a walk."

"Take 5: A 30 day rest to a calmer, happier you" is available now, offering readers exactly what its title promises: a five-minute reset backed by decades of professional experience and hard-earned personal wisdom.
