When Cowing Robards, a local apparel and production business, reached out to Alexandria Technical & Community College's Communication Design program with a special request, students were ready to help bring some extra Homecoming spirit to town.
The local business wanted a custom window painting to celebrate this year's high school Homecoming Parade as it passed by their storefront. With a quick turnaround and tight timeline, Instructor Cailey Birchem sketched out the design while her students jumped in to help paint and bring the vision to life.
The collaboration gave students a great opportunity to showcase their creativity outside the classroom while connecting with local businesses and community traditions. It's the kind of real-world experience that lets students apply their design skills in a professional setting while making a visible impact in their community.
Though the Homecoming Parade was ultimately canceled due to weather, the colorful window display still served as a bright spot for the community and a testament to the partnership between ATCC students and local businesses. The project showed how quickly students can adapt their skills to help out when the community calls.
