Four Alexandria Technical & Community College students claimed top honors at the annual 12-Hour Student Design Challenge, delivering a complete print branding package for the Pope County Humane Society — all in a single day.
At 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 13, three design teams representing Alexandria Technical & Community College (ATCC) and St. Cloud Technical and Community College (SCTCC) gathered in an Alexandria College classroom to begin dissecting the design brief for the 12-Hour Student Design Challenge. Fueled by coffee, snacks, and steady guidance from industry mentors, they worked straight through the day. At 7:30 p.m., final pitches were delivered. One hour later, at 8:30 p.m., a winning team was announced, marking the completion of an intense, real-world creative sprint.
Throughout the fast-paced event, seven industry professionals coached students through concept development and refinement. Final presentations were evaluated by three professional judges.
This year’s nonprofit client, the Pope County Humane Society, asked students to strengthen public perception of the organization through cohesive, professional print materials that communicate care, trust, and credibility. Teams were tasked with extending the existing brand identity into flexible print collateral, promoting programs and volunteer opportunities to a broad audience, and prioritizing low-cost, practical production decisions.
After 12 hours of research, strategy, and creative execution, an ATCC Communication Design team earned the coveted trophy. Winning students Elyse Adams, Brea Paurus, Ella Bartos, and Autumn Hubbard were recognized for their strategic thinking, cohesive brand application, and thoughtful, production-aware solutions aligned with the Humane Society’s mission.
The annual event, hosted by AAF Central Minnesota, offers students a professional, agency-style experience while delivering meaningful creative support to a local nonprofit partner.
