Alexandria Technical & Community College recorded the highest percentage enrollment growth among Minnesota State's 33 colleges and universities this fall. Fall 2026 headcount enrollment increased to 4,334 students, up 514 students, or 13.5%, compared to Fall 2025. By the numbers, headcount growth was second only to Normandale Community College (Bloomington, MN) whose total enrollment is over 12,700.
The increase is on top of the highest enrollment numbers in the college’s history in 2025/2026 and significantly outpaced enrollment trends across the Minnesota State system and the higher education sector. While overall system enrollment grew by 0.3% and Minnesota State colleges experienced a collective increase of 1.5%, Alexandria College's 13.5% growth rate was the highest among all colleges and universities, and the only double-digit growth in the system.
In addition to headcount growth, Full-Year Equivalent (FYE) enrollment increased from 1139.0 to 1229.7, an 8% increase over the previous year. FYE is calculated by dividing total credits sold by 30.
“This growth reflects years of intentional investment in our infrastructure, our programs, and the overall college experience for students,” said Michael Seymour, president of Alexandria Technical & Community College. “Students choose Alexandria College because they see quality programs, modernized facilities, and industry-standard technology. But more importantly, they see clear pathways to meaningful careers, strong transfer opportunities, and a campus community committed to their success. We are proud of this achievement, but even more encouraged by what it means for the students and communities we serve.”
Several programs and student populations experienced notable growth this fall. The largest area of growth from Fall 2025 to Fall 2026 was in second-year enrollment, reflecting an 8.5% increase in retention rate. Increased enrollment in military initiatives, like the college’s partnership with the U.S. Naval Community College (USNCC) contributed to both headcount and FYE growth. Visiting students, who are enrolled in courses but have not declared a major, also increased from last year.
Academic programs with the largest growth include Police Training & Education, Business Transfer Pathway, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, Retail Management, and two Health Sciences programs in partnership with USNCC.
This fall’s growth continues an upward, multi-year enrollment trend. From fiscal year 2021 to fiscal year 2026, headcount grew by 45.7%, and FYE increased by 39%. Recent investments in academic programming, student life, housing, athletics, and military-connected learning opportunities have expanded access for students, making Alexandria College both a strong local option and a destination college for learners from across the state and beyond.
"Growth matters because every new student represents a future skilled professional who will strengthen our communities and workforce," Seymour said. "The Minnesota State funding allocation model currently rewards enrollment growth, but uncertainty surrounding future funding model components reinforces the importance of careful planning. Our goal has always been sustainable growth, and our priority is ensuring every student receives a high-quality experience and the support needed to reach their goals.”
