The Alexandria City Council voted to submit a Child Care Economic Development Grant application on March 11. If the application is approved, the funds will be used to build the first of three townhomes, each accommodating two childcare facilities.
Alexandria College will provide the land, and second-year carpentry students will build the townhomes. The college will lease the land to the city, and the city will own the buildings. Details of the agreement are still being worked out.
Alexandria College’s Early Education students will work with the childcare businesses through on-the-job training and internships. The students will also have the opportunity to kickstart childcare businesses of their own.
