Guidance Counselors: A Healthcare Career Path Your Students Should Know About

Mar 4, 2026 | 11:52 AM
As a high school guidance counselor, you are often the first person students turn to when exploring career options. While many express an interest in healthcare, not all see themselves pursuing a four-year degree, attending nursing school, or working in a hospital setting. Expanding the range of healthcare pathways you present can open doors for students who might otherwise feel limited in their options.

One high-demand career path your students may not yet know about is that of an Ophthalmic Medical Technician.

The Ophthalmic Medical Technician Program at Alexandria Technical and Community College is a fully accredited, two-year Associate of Applied Science degree that prepares graduates for national IJCAHPO certification at the intermediate level and immediate entry into the workforce.

What Is an Ophthalmic Medical Technician?

Ophthalmic Medical Technicians work alongside ophthalmologists in medical eye care settings. They are highly skilled allied health professionals who assist with patient workups, diagnostic testing, imaging, minor procedures, surgery, and patient education.

Technicians play a direct role in helping ophthalmologists diagnose, treat, and manage conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. They are an essential part of the clinical team and work closely with physicians in fast paced, patient-centered environments.

Why This Career Path Matters Now

There is currently a national shortage of qualified ophthalmic personnel. As the population ages and the prevalence of chronic eye disease increases, the demand for trained technicians continues to grow.

Graduates of our program currently have a 100 percent job placement rate.

For counselors seeking stable, workforce aligned options for students who want direct entry into healthcare, this career pathway deserves consideration.

A Flexible Hybrid Online Model That Expands Access

The program is delivered in a hybrid online format. Students complete academic coursework online while gaining supervised hands-on clinical experience in local ophthalmology practices.

This structure allows students to:

  • Stay close to home
  • Reduce relocation costs
  • Work while completing coursework
  • Gain real world clinical experience
For rural students or those who need flexibility, this model can make a healthcare career more attainable.

This career path is a strong option for students who:

  • Enjoy science and working with people
  • Prefer hands-on learning
  • Want direct patient interaction
  • Are not interested in hospital shift work
  • May not see themselves as traditional four-year college candidates
  • Want to enter the workforce with a respected credential
Graduates are eligible to sit for a national certification exam, creating both immediate employment opportunities and clear pathways for advancement.

A Career with Growth Potential

Ophthalmology offers advancement through certification and specialization. Technicians can grow into roles such as lead technician, imaging specialist, surgical coordinator, and clinical manager. They can also pursue advanced certifications and transition to corporate roles such as clinical application specialist for ophthalmic devices.

This is not simply a job. It is a career ladder within a specialized area of healthcare.
