A Career Built on Curiosity and Growth 

At Alexandria Technical & Community College, our clinical preceptors play a vital role in shaping the next generation of ophthalmic professionals. Through our Preceptor Spotlight Series, we are proud to recognize the dedicated mentors who invest their time, expertise, and passion into helping our students succeed. 

This month, we are pleased to feature Nichol Cook, COMT, of St. Paul Eye Clinic, whose career in eye care spans three decades and whose commitment to mentorship continues to make a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike. 

Nichol's journey into eye care began while she was a college student looking for a job that fit her class schedule. What started as a position in optical quickly developed into a lifelong passion. 

A Passion for Teaching 

After earning her COA and later COT credentials, Nichol became a preceptor and guest lecturer at the School of Ophthalmic Medical Technology in St. Paul, where she worked with first- and second-year students for approximately ten years. In 2025, she earned her COMT certification, reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning. 

“Mentoring upcoming technicians is a tremendous gift,” Nichol says. “I love sharing my knowledge and helping others learn and grow in their careers.” 

Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences 

Nichol believes every student learns differently and tailors her approach accordingly. She helps students build both confidence and clinical judgment while learning how to provide exceptional patient care. 

One of her favorite parts of teaching is witnessing the 'lightbulb moment' when a new skill finally clicks. 

Lessons That Last a Lifetime 

Nichol encourages students to ask questions, seek help when needed, and embrace lifelong learning. She reminds students that ophthalmology is ultimately about caring for patients and providing the highest quality care possible every day.

Investing in the Future of the Profession 

She views continuing education as an opportunity to strengthen skills, stay current with advances in ophthalmology, and share knowledge with colleagues and students. Nichol believes ophthalmic technicians will continue to play an increasingly important role as healthcare technology evolves. 

Advice for Future Preceptors 

“Becoming a preceptor has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career,” Nichol says. “I learn just as much from students as I teach them.” She encourages experienced technicians to become mentors and help shape the next generation of ophthalmic professionals.
