POLICY STATEMENT

Alexandria Technical and Community College expects all students to uphold the highest standards of honesty, responsibility, and ethical conduct in their academic work. Any behavior that misrepresents the originality of a student's work or harms another student's academic progress constitutes a violation of academic integrity.

Academic Integrity Violations

Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to the following:

Cheating

Cheating is the unauthorized use or exchange of information (or the appearance of) by students for the purpose of meeting academic standards or requirements; examples include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Copying another student’s work, including assignments from previous semesters. 
  2. Using unauthorized materials or assistance on tests/exams or assignments. 
  3. Using unauthorized notes, Artificial Intelligence (AI), computational intelligence, or other aids during a test/exam or coursework. 
  4. Collaborating on assignments or tests/exams without instructor approval. 
  5. Gaining unauthorized access to test/exam materials. 

Refer to the class syllabus regarding the use of UI or computational intelligence.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is presenting work that is not one's own-words, ideas, images, statistics, or data-as one's own without proper citation. This includes:

  1. Plagiarism of any kind (representing another person's, AI's, or computational intelligence's words or ideas as one's own without proper attribution or credit). 
  2. Copying text from online or print sources without crediting the author. 
  3. Paraphrasing another’s ideas without acknowledgment. 
  4. Submitting a paper written wholly or partially by someone else. 
  5. Including images, graphs, or charts without attribution. 
  6. Using AI-generated content without disclosure or instructor approval. 

Academic Misconduct

Any action that undermines the integrity of the grading process, such as: 

  1. Offering bribes or threats to influence a grade. 
  2. Falsely claiming a crisis to obtain an extension. 
  3. Misrepresenting completion of required coursework, such as internships or practicums. 

Academic Fraud

Serious Offenses that involve falsifying or misrepresenting information, including:

  1. Fabrication: Inventing data, sources, or research results. 
  2. Falsification: Distorting, omitting, or misrepresenting data or sources. 
  3. Forgery: Altering grades, official records, or signatures without authorization. 

Double Submission

Submitting the same work for multiple courses without explicit instructor approval.

Collusion

Assisting another student in committing academic dishonesty, such as:

  1. Allowing another student to copy answers. 
  2. Sharing unauthorized test/exam information. 
  3. Writing/rewriting parts of another student’s paper without proper acknowledgment. 

Consequences

Violations of academic integrity are taken seriously and may result in disciplinary actions as outlined in the ATCC Policy 3.6 Student Code of Conduct and ATCC Procedure 3.6.1 Student Conduct and Sanctions for Violation of Conduct.
