Free tax prep available for low income taxpayers

Alexandria Technical & Community College accounting students are offering free tax return preparation for low income taxpayers from February 6 to April 11, 2024 (closed over spring break). Students are certified by the IRS to prepare returns.
Do you Qualify for Free Preparation?

Your income should be $45,000 or less, and you cannot have complex tax issues like rental income, depreciation, multi-state income, or military income. We are not trained to do foreign student returns.

  • When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 6 through April 11. Closed 3/5 and 3/7 for spring break. Hours are 4-6 pm on a first come, first served basis.
  • Where: Room 755 of the Office and Information Technology Center at Alexandria College (by the big "A" monument). It is a long walk to the room - look for a map at the entrance along with signs. Campus Map (PDF) >>

Items to Bring
  • State issued Photo ID and Social Security Cards for everyone listed on the return.
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse, and dependents
  • Wage and earning statement(s) form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers
  • Interest, dividend, gambling winnings, and non-employee compensation statements + 1099-misc for your Minnesota tax rebate (bring all 1099s)
  • Amount paid for daycare, and the provider's identifying number
  • Any contributions to retirement account, long-term care insurance, or HSA
  • Certificate of rent paid or property tax statements
  • Voided check with bank routing numbers
  • Marketplace insurance information 1095-A, MFIP, MSA, SSI, or other aid
  • 1098 mortgage interest statement
  • Any transactions involving cryptocurrency
  • Investment income or any broker statements
  • IRS-issued identity theft number
  • Last year's tax return, if possible
College Students:
  • Bring 1098-T, receipts for books, computer rentals, software or virus protection receipts, course-related costs, and student loan payments.
  • Student loan records, payments made, interest paid.
Parents of K-12 children:
  • Bring receipts for supplies, books, instruments, computers, educational software, calculators, reading, writing or math skill courses, and driver's ed courses.

The ATCC accounting students have been certified by the IRS at an Advanced Level. We know the new laws and credits and how they affect you! We are trained to get every credit you qualify for. Every return is reviewed by an experienced instructor or tax professional.
