What are the typical responsibilities of an OMT?

Patient Care

OMT’s assist in performing eye examinations, obtaining patient medical histories, and preparing patients for procedures.

Diagnostic Testing

They conduct various diagnostic tests such as vision testing, tonometry (eye pressure measurement), and ocular imaging to assist the ophthalmologist in diagnosing eye conditions and diseases.

Patient Education

They educate patients on proper eye care procedures, contact lens usage, and medication administration.

Instrument Maintenance

OMT’s are responsible for maintaining and calibrating ophthalmic instruments and equipment to ensure accurate results, as well as cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments.

Surgical Assisting

They may also assist surgeons in eye surgeries such as LASIK, cataract and glaucoma procedures.
