Ophthalmic Medical Technician Program Director
The curriculum for our cutting-edge two-year, 60-credit hybrid online program was designed by Aaron V. Shukla, PhD, COMT. Dr. Shukla previously directed the fully accredited ophthalmic technician program at St. Catherine's University in St. Paul, MN, from 2006 to 2019. This robust curriculum ensures that our students receive a top-tier education, combining online coursework with hands-on clinical experience.
Graduates of our program earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to sit for the Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification exam through the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO). In March 2023, the International Council of Accreditation (ICA) approved our letter of intent, allowing our first graduating class to be eligible for this certification. We are actively working towards full ICA accreditation.
The demand for skilled ophthalmic technicians is increasing due to a nationwide shortage. Our program addresses this need by offering comprehensive training in a flexible, accessible hybrid online format. This model allows students from diverse backgrounds and locations to gain essential skills and knowledge, preparing them for successful careers in the ophthalmic field.
The success of our inaugural class is just the beginning. We are dedicated to continuously enhancing our program by integrating the latest advancements in ophthalmic technology and educational practices. Our goal is to equip students with the expertise needed to support ophthalmologists in delivering top-quality patient care and to raise awareness about this rewarding and vital profession.
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend heartfelt congratulations to our graduates. We also express our deep gratitude to our faculty, preceptors at participating clinical rotation sites, and advisory committee members. Their unwavering support and insights have been instrumental in achieving this success.
