POLICY STATEMENT

Purpose

Intercollegiate sports are an integral part of the educational experience at Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC). ATCC athletics exists to promote school spirit and unity serving as another means for students to take pride in the college. Organized sports provide student athletes with co-curricular learning opportunities designed to build character, discipline, persistence, leadership and responsibility.

Student athletes are ambassadors essential to creating a positive reputation for the college. ATCC will ensure access and safety in an environment that supports equitable opportunities for all students.

Conference and Division Membership

Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) is a member of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) and a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The MCAC’s mission advances intercollegiate athletics by providing an engaging and supportive environment for success of our student athletes and competition among member institutions. It is the mission of the NJCAA to foster a national program of athletic participation in an environment that supports equitable opportunities consistent with the educational objectives of member colleges. ATCC also competes under other collegiate governing bodies.

ATCC may add or remove sports after a review of the impact on students, finances, the institution’s facilities master plan, Title IX compliance, and completion of the student and college consultation process. ATCC shall operate according to the rules and standards of the conference as long as such rules are not in conflict with federal or state law, Minnesota State board policies, or Minnesota State system procedure.

Gender Equity in Athletics

ATCC is committed to providing equal opportunity in athletics for students of all gender identities and gender expressions. ATCC will provide athletic opportunities for students in accordance with federal and state, as well as MCAC, NJCAA, and other collegiate governing body requirements.

Student Athlete Health Insurance

ATCC requires students participating (practicing, competitions, etc.) in intercollegiate athletics to maintain health insurance through a plan or rider that includes coverage for participation in intercollegiate athletics. Prior to student participation in intercollegiate athletics, ATCC will provide notice to students of the requirement for health insurance.

Mascot

Unauthorized use of the ATCC mascot or logo is prohibited. Any mascot uniform requires approval by the college administration at least 10 business days prior to the event.
